How To

10 tips for a healthy lifestyle

How to lead a healthy lifestyle

We live in a fast paced world, where we don’t get enough sleep and smoke cigarettes. We don't properly care for our bodies.

When you work full-time, it is difficult to maintain a healthy diet and exercise program. It's even harder when you are stressed because your mind tells you that you cannot handle the situation anymore. So we feel guilty and give up.

You may feel that something is not right with your body. Ask your doctor for his/her opinion about your current situation. If there is nothing abnormal, then it might just be stress from your job.

Some people believe that their job allows them to exercise regularly, or that they have friends who support them in staying fit. Those people are lucky. They don't have problems. They have everything under control. I wish all people could do the same. Unfortunately, most people don't know the best ways to balance their personal and professional lives. Many people end up with bad habits which eventually lead to diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and many others.

Here are some tips to help improve your lifestyle.

  1. Get adequate sleep - 7 hours a day minimum, 8 hours maximum. This means sleeping properly and not consuming caffeine in the hour before bed. Caffeine blocks melatonin, which can make it difficult for you to fall asleep. Also, make sure that your bedroom is clean and dark. You should use blackout curtains if possible, especially if your work is late at night.
  2. Eat well - Have breakfast every morning. Sugar products, fried food, processed foods and white breads should be avoided. Try to include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables for lunch. Afternoon snacks are recommended to be rich in protein and fiber, such as nuts, seeds, beans, fish and dairy products. Avoid unhealthy snacks such as chips, candies or cookies, cakes, sodas, and other sweets.
  3. Drink lots of water. We don't have enough. Water can help us burn more calories, keep our skin supple and young, flush out toxins and improve our digestion. Six glasses of water per day will help you lose weight quicker. Checking the color of urine is a good way to gauge your hydration. Dehydrated is yellow, orange dehydrated slightly; normal pink urine; overhydrated red urine; and clear urine indicates highly-hydrated.
  4. Regular exercise can increase energy and decrease depression. Walking can be a great way to improve your mood. Walking is easy, but it takes effort and concentration. Your brain needs to focus on walking while breathing slowly and deeply. For between 100 and 150 calories, a 30 minute walk can be enough to burn about 100 to 150 calories. Start slowly and increase your pace gradually. Stretching after exercise is important to avoid injury.
  5. Positive thinking is key to mental health. Positive thinking can create a happy atmosphere within us. Negative thoughts can drain energy and cause anxiety. Focus on what you want and do the things that will keep you motivated. If you feel overwhelmed with all the tasks, you can break each task down into smaller steps. You will fail occasionally, but you can always get up and try again.
  6. Say No. We can often be so busy that it is hard to see how much of our time we are wasting on useless tasks. It is important you can say no when it is necessary. Being polite when you say "no" does not mean that you are rude. It is just saying no. You will always find another way to do the job. Be clear about your boundaries. Ask for assistance from someone else. Or simply delegate this work to someone else.
  7. Take care of you body. A healthier diet will help boost your metabolism, and you can lose extra weight. Avoid eating anything heavy or oily as they can raise cholesterol levels. Three meals and two snacks are a good rule of thumb. Aim to consume 2000-2500 calories each day.
  8. Meditate – Meditation is great for stress relief and anxiety. Your mind will relax when you sit still and close your eyes. This exercise will give you clarity of thought, which is very helpful in reaching decisions. Regular meditation practice will make you happier and calmer.
  9. Breakfast is the most important meal in the day. Skipping breakfast could cause you to eat too much during lunchtime. It is never too late, so long as you eat your breakfast within one hour of getting up. Breakfast boosts energy and helps to manage hunger.
  10. Eat clean food - Food affects our moods more than we know. Avoid junk food or any food items that contain preservatives or artificial ingredients. These products can cause acid reflux and increase cravings. Vegetables and fruits are high in vitamins and minerals, which can lead to better overall health.
