Sugar can naturally be found in many foods. However sugar is sometimes added to foods in order increase their sweetness. You can find sugar in white, brown (or honey), corn syrup, and other forms. While sugar can be harmful in small amounts it can pose a risk to your health. Refined sugar is very low in nutrients and is often used to enhance the flavour, texture, and colour of processed foods.

Although sugars have nutritional benefits, they can also be high in calories. Sugar can make you crave more. Experts recommend that you limit your intake of refined sugar to ten percent of your daily energy intake. If you are constantly consuming sugary foods, this could be an indicator of unhealthy eating habits.

Salt

The inorganic compound sodium is used as a natural preservative in foods. It inhibits the growth and prolongs shelf life. In order to improve the texture and taste, salt is often added in processed foods. Studies have shown that processed foods are more salty and high in sodium. The highest sodium food groups were dairy products, gravy and sauce and processed meat.

The body loses sodium via perspiration, urine, or diarrhoea. This results in hyponatremia, where the sodium level in the blood is reduced. This can lead to muscle cramps and dizziness as well as shock. Extreme cases may result in a drop in sodium levels that can lead to a person falling into a coma.

Flavorings

Food manufacturers often use flavorings to improve the taste of their products. Some flavors have just one ingredient while others can have hundreds of different ones. These flavorings are considered safe by US Food and Drug Administration. However, food manufacturers are reluctant to list all their ingredients on the label, as they do not want to reveal proprietary formulas or ingredients.

Natural and synthetic flavors can be used in food. They are usually added to processed foods and have little or no nutritional value. Natural flavors can have some health benefits. Plain yogurt should not be made with actual strawberries. Instead, real strawberries will give it the strawberry flavor and fiber our bodies require.

Serving size

Although the serving size is based upon typical consumption, it's important to remember that this is an estimation. Packaged food serving sizes are not recommended and may not be suitable for all diets. For example, an ice cream serving contains 500 calories with 29 grams of sugar.
